MYLNE, James (1738/9-88: ODNB)
A tenant farmer at Lochill, Haddingtonshire, he was the son of George Mylne and his wife, Janet (Tod). His posthumous book, edited by his son George, is dedicated to Henry Dundas of Melville; Mylne met Dundas when both were studying at the Dalkeith Grammar School. In about 1760 he married Marion Rennie and they had eight children. He died of fever. His book was published by subscription; there is a list of 850 names. Robert Burns was scornful of Mylne’s Scottish poems but believed that the English ones merited publication. (ODNB 30 Mar. 2020; ancestry.co.uk 30 Mar 2020) SR
