Author: Musaes, I.

Biography:

MUSAES, I. (fl 1825)

Published in Nottingham in 1825, Poems is the only work known to have been published under the name of this author. The “I.” could stand for a forename beginning with either I or J. The surname is rare globally, matching no public records in Britain in this period and only a few German and French ones; the variant “Musaeus” is only slightly more common. The poems themselves have to do typically with solitude and loss, especially lost love, in various personae: the slave leaving his native land, the drowning mariner, the wanderer. It is possible that “I. Musaes” is a pseudonym, perhaps with a nod at the legendary Greek poet Musaeus of Athens.
