Author: Murray, William
Biography:
MURRAY, William (fl 1822)
Odds are that the author of a collection of poems “chiefly in the Scottish Dialect” in Carlisle in 1822 would have been a Scot or a man with Scottish connections, but “William Murray” is such a common name that it is impossible to identify him with certainty. It is unlikely that he was the Scottish episcopal clergyman William Murray (1766-1828). He might have been the William Murray who, with his wife Margaret, baptised at least five children in Carlisle in the 1820s starting with a William; if so, they will have been one of three or four couples with those names who married in Scotland c. 1817-19. But he might not have been a resident of Carlisle at all. SR
