Author: MURPHY, Henry
Biography:
MURPHY, Henry (fl 1790-92)
Biographical information is sparse. The opening of Book 2 of Conquest of Quebec describes how he became blind in early childhood as a result of illness. The Preface thanks his brother-in-law, Abraham Newland, for help with the poem and securing its publication. Likely Newland was the Bank of England officer who has an entry in the ODNB. Both of Murphy’s books have subscription lists (Ambrose Hardinge Giffard [q.v.] subscribed to Poetical Ethicks). He may have been connected to Samuel Whyte whose English Academy was on Grafton Street and who was also a subscriber.
