Biography:
MORRIS, Francis William Jarrett (1804-76: ancestry.co.uk)
He twice gave his place of birth as London and once as Buckinghamshire in the Censuses. In addition, he gave his full name in the dedication to Elva’s Revenge (1834) and when he signed his marriage certificate in 1836. There are no matches to his exact name in genealogical sources, several candidates for Francis William and many more for Francis. For none of them is there any corroboration and it is quite possible that clerical scribes entered a shortened name (if indeed a baptism exists). He married Augusta Ide (1810-76) on 11 Jan. 1836 at South Bersted, near Bognor Regis, Sussex. No issue were listed in the Censuses 1841-71 and none are recorded in their wills. They remained there until their deaths in 1876. His occupation is given as shoemaker in various sources but he traded in the High Street, South Bersted, employing several men and apprentices, and had a servant at home, so was probably more in the skilled artisan class than a labourer. He died on 4 Mar. 1876, aged 72, at Bognor, South Bersted, Sussex, leaving an estate of under £600. Augusta died later that month, aged 66, leaving the same amount. They were both buried at St. Mary Magdalene, South Bersted. (ancestry.co.uk 21 Nov. 2022; findmypast.co.uk 21 Nov. 2022; Brighton Gazette 21 Jan. 1836; Horsham . . . Express 14 Mar. 1876) AA
