Biography:

MORGAN, T. (fl 1797)

Morgan appears to have published only one book, a collection of light occasional poetry. All clues to his (certainly his) identity come from there. It was published in Wakefield, Yorkshire, and is dedicated to the inhabitants of Wakefield as “a tribute of gratitude.” The author mentions having moved there from “the South” and includes a poem composed for recitation by “a young nobleman” at Loughborough House School in Leicestershire, not far from Birmingham, Warwickshire. His name was probably Thomas; he might have been a schoolmaster. The largely frivolous content of the volume—poems to Laura, Anna, Emma, and the like, shepherds pining for shepherdesses—would seem to rule out Thomas Morgan (1776-1857), Baptist minister at Bond. St., Birmingham, from 1823 to 1853, however, and no more promising match has been found.
