Biography:

MORAN, Edward (b c. 1797-1849: ancestry.co.uk)

He was probably born in Limerick but no birth or baptism records have been found. In an application to the RLF his wife gave his year of birth as 1800, but his given age in both the 1841 Census and the notice for his burial indicate that 1797 may be correct. He worked as a reporter in Limerick and married Mary Ann Cooke in Dublin on 27 Mar. 1826. They had no children. They moved to London where he worked as sub-editor of the Globe and Traveller newspaper; he may have obtained this position through the help of his friend, Thomas Moore (q.v.). He was known as a convivial wit but he died penniless of cholera at his home on New Kent Road, London. Newspaper notices attributed his susceptibility to the disease to a weakened constitution after becoming teetotal. He was buried in the reused graves in Norwood Cemetery, London. He also published The Countess of Salisbury…and the Maid of Corinth (3 volumes, London, 1840); it was issued anonymously but the dedication is signed “E.R.M.” and his wife listed it in her RLF application.  The RLF awarded her £30 in 1852 and turned down a further application in 1855.   (RLF file 1298; ancestry.co.uk 9 July 2021; Limerick and Clare Examiner 20 Oct. 1849; Maurice Lenihan, Limerick, Its History and Antiquities [1866]) SR
