Author: Moore, John McDermott
Biography:
MOORE, John McDermott (fl 1830-50)
Moore was an Irish immigrant who arrived in New York City about 1830 and made his living through journalism: he edited a newspaper for emigrés like himself, contributed to or was employed by other periodicals (The Parlour Journal, Brother Jonathan), and also wrote fiction and burlesque drama. The critic Charles Fanning praises him as representing "the best in Irish-American literary self-consciousness before the Great Famine" (33). Personal details, even birth and death dates, are lacking. (Charles Fanning, The Irish Voice in America [2015]) HJ
