Biography:

MOORE, Horatio Newton (1814-59: ancestry.com)

Born in Gloucester NJ in 1814 to Clarisa (Hand) and John B. Moore, he was living in Philadelphia when he published his first play, Orlando, in 1835, and he remained "a Philadelphia writer" for the rest of his life. He married Sarah Stowe (or Stow) at Woodbury NJ on 8 Nov. 1834 and they had two children. He wrote at least one other tragedy, some short stories, and a novel. He also contributed to periodicals and undertook biographies and historical works such as his lives of Generals Anthony Wayne and Francis Marian (both 1845) and a history of the French Revolution (1855). His name is so distinctive that the appearance of it in the 1850 census of Camden NJ, where he was living without his family and giving his occupation as "engineer," cannot be ignored: perhaps he was passing through on census day, or perhaps he was there on a temporary assignment. His death in Philadelphia on 26 Aug. 1859 at the age of 45 was attributed to heart disease. (ancestry.com 21 Sept. 2025; Appleton; Richmond Dispatch 5 Sept. 1859) HJ
