Biography:

MOORE, Edward (1712-57: ODNB)

Moore is for the most part a "prior" author who owes his place in this bibliography to the fact that his Fables for the Female Sex (1744) were sometimes paired with Langhorne's Fables of Flora (1771) and that his posthumous Poetical Works (1806) included some previously unpublished material. Born in Abingdon, he was the son of a dissenting minister, Thomas Moore, and his wife Mary (Alder) Moore. He was apprenticed to a linen draper in London but after a failure in business he turned to literature, finding most success on the stage, notably with his domestic tragedy The Gamester (1753). From 1753 to 1756 he was the editor of a periodical, The World. He married Jane Hamilton in 1750; they had one son. Moore died in poverty at his home in Lambeth. (ODNB 11 May 2020)
