Biography:
MOORE, Dugald (1805-41: ODNB)
The son of James Moore, a soldier in one of the Highland regiments, he was born in Glasgow. His mother’s name is not known but she was left in poverty following the early death of her husband and Moore’s entire education was due to her. After an unhappy experience working for a tobacco manufacturer, he joined James Lumsden’s bookselling company in the copper printing department. With Lumsden’s help in securing subscriptions, he was able to publish his first book, The African, which quickly went to a second edition; the book is dedicated to Lumsden. Although not widely popular, Moore’s poetry was valued by critics and was remunerative enough to allow him to establish his own bookselling and stationery business. In addition to the works listed in the database, he published The Devoted One, and Other Poems in 1839. He died unmarried after a brief illness and was buried in the Glasgow necropolis.
