Author: Montgomery, Alexander
Biography:
MONTGOMERY, Alexander (fl 16th Century)
He is a prior author whose most popular and enduring work, The Cherry and the Slae, was probably first printed as early as 1597 by Robert Waldegrave. Some of his devotional poems may have been printed anonymously in his lifetime but other works survived only in a manuscript presented to the University of Edinburgh by William Drummond of Hawthornden in or after 1626; some had never been printed until 1821 when they were edited by David Laing for the volume prepared by David Irving. Nothing is known for certain about Montgomery’s life but he is assumed to have been a soldier and a courtier. Irving dates his death to between 1597 and 1615. For David Laing see the headnote to William Dunbar. (David Irving, The Poems of Alexander Montgomery [1821]) SR
