Biography:

MONCKTON, Charlotte Penelope (1785-1806: ancestry.co.uk)

She was born on 17 Nov. 1785 and baptised at St. George’s, Hanover Square, Westminster, London, on 20 Dec., the fourth of nine children and the third daughter of Robert Monckton-Arundell, 4th Viscount Galway (1752-1810), MP and landowner, and Elizabeth Matthews (1760-1801), daughter of Daniel Matthews of Felix Hall, Essex,  who had married at Marylebone, London, in 1779. She died at Serlby Hall, near Bawtry, Yorkshire, on 29 Apr. 1806 and was buried at St. Peter’s, Felkirth, on 5 May. Her poems were gathered by her sisters and published by the family as Lines, Written on Several Occasions (1806); they record her sense of loss on the deaths of her mother and brother: “On the Death of my adored and ever-lamented Mother, who died November 1801” and “On the Death of my beloved Brother Augustus Philip” who had died, aged 13, in Aug. 1802.
