Biography:

MOIR, John (c. 1740-1812: findmypast.co.uk)

Nothing is known about his birth and parentage but likely he was born in Scotland in about 1740; the record for his death in 1812 gives his age as 72. CCEd records that he was ordained as a deacon in 1777 as “literate,” or without a university degree. However, he seems later to have attended university and he used “A.M.” after his name on title pages; the degree may have predated his ordination as a priest in 1784. His wife's first name was Elizabeth and he may have been the John Moir who married Elizabeth Smith on 9 Apr. 1781 at St. Luke’s, Old Street, London, although the marriage record shows that both bride and groom were widowed. The family lived at 8 Bolt Court, Fleet Street, and Moir was a lecturer at St. Dionis Backchurch in Lime Street (the church has since been demolished). They had two daughters and five sons; two of the sons died young and there is a memorial to them in All Saints, Nazeing, Essex, where John Moir served as vicar from 1806 until his death in 1812. He was buried at the church in Nazeing on 9 June. Moir also published Female Tuition; or, An Address to Mothers (1784) and Preventive Policy, or the Worth of Each the Safety of All (1796).
