Biography:
MIRROR, Isaac (fl 1795-7)
The name is almost certainly a pseudonym, like “Peter Pindar” whom he emulates. It does not appear in genealogical sites during this period, nor in contemporary newspapers. The author declares himself to be “of the Middle Temple” but is not recorded in their Register of Admissions between 1789 and 1795. In the second edition of Mensa Regum (1796) an announcement of forthcoming publications by the same hand includes both an imminent work critical of the government especially in its handling of the war against France and a longer-term project of a “General History of the War” in two volumes, neither of which appeared under any author’s name. Reviewers were scornful, one citing “impure ideas and indelicate allusion”—with illustrative quotations. (ancestry.com 25 June 2023; findmypast.com 25 June 2023; CR 19 [1797], 344-6) HJ
