Author: Milton, Matthew Smith

Biography:

MILTON, Matthew Smith (1811-38: ancestry.co.uk)

Born in Sept. 1811 in Chatham, Kent, to Sarah (Wheeler) and Thomas Milton, he was baptised at St. Mary's, Chatham, on 25 Oct. 1811. He met John Walker Ord (q.v.) in Edinburgh so probably he was attending university there (most likely studying medicine). He and Ord left Edinburgh under a cloud after they published some verses satirising the authorities. In London they established the short-lived Metropolitan Journal of Literature and, not long before Milton’s death, the Metropolitan Conservative Journal. The title page of his Ocean Bride names him as author of The Broken Heart which he had published anonymously in 1833. He died in Mar. 1838, possibly from an accident, and was buried on 30 mar. at St. George in the East, London. (W.
