Biography:
MILMAN, Henry Hart (1791-1868: ODNB)
The son of Sir Francis Milman, baronet and physician to George III, and his wife Frances (Hart) Milman, he was born in London and educated at Eton and Oxford (BA 1814, MA 1816, DD 1849). He combined a brilliant academic and literary career with a steady ascent through the ranks of the church, where he eventually became Dean of St. Paul's. While he was still a student his poem "The Belvidere Apollo" won the Newdigate Prize in 1812; since it is only 6 pages long, the first edition is excluded from this bibliography. He took orders in 1816 and accepted his first living in 1818. From 1821 to 1831 he was Professor of Poetry at Oxford. In 1824 he married Mary Ann Cockell; they had six children. Milman wrote prodigiously: plays for the stage, with mixed results, from 1815 to 1826; long historical and dramatic poems; translations from Greek, Latin, and Sanscrit; regular contributions to the Quarterly Review between 1824 and 1865; an edition and biography of Gibbon (1838-9); and authoritative prose histories of the Jews (1830), of Christianity (1840), and of "Latin Christianity" (1854-5). He is buried in St. Paul's. (ODNB 11 Apr. 2020)
