MILLS, Joseph (1732-1804: ancestry.co.uk)
The son of the Rev. Thomas Mills, perpetual curate of Cowbit in Lincolnshire, and his wife Ann Ray, he was baptised on 25 Jan. 1732 in Spalding, Lincolnshire. His father died in 1746. He matriculated at Jesus College, Cambridge, on 16 Apr. 1751 (BA 1755) and was ordained in 1757. He became the vicar of Cowbit and, from 1780 to 1784, was rector of Weston and Dembleby, Lincolnshire. He married Ann Garencieres on 9 Sept. 1769; his Collection of Letters and Verses includes several affectionate letters and poems addressed to her. Records have been located for just one of their children, Georgiana, who was born in 1783. Mills died at home on 19 Dec. 1804 and was buried on 22 Dec. His only other known publication is Plato’s Apology to Socrates, Translated into English (1775); it has an extensive subscription list that includes the names of several of his wife’s relatives.
