Biography:

MILLS, John Henry (fl 1806-8)

Nothing has been discovered about Mills's life before 1806 when, as a married British actor, he was recruited by the actor and manager John Bernard to join a company that he was forming to undertake a tour of America. Both Mills and his wife, whom Bernard describes as "a fair walking lady with an excellent voice" (353n) joined the company and performed in Boston, Philadelphia, and New York. Mills recycled his Manchester volume of Poetical Trifles under a slightly different title in Baltimore and attracted a respectable number of subscribers. The couple apparently parted company with Bernard before he went to tour in Canada, and it is not clear whether they went back to Britain or not. (John Bernard, Retrospections of America, 1797-1811 [1886])
