Biography:

MEZIERE, Harriet, formerly CHILCOT (1754-84: ancestry.co.uk)

She was baptised on 29 Apr. 1754 at Bath Abbey, Somerset, the second of three daughters of Henry Chilcot, jeweller and goldsmith, and his wife Ann (maiden name unknown). Her elder sister Elizabeth Chilcot (later Hudson), became a miniature portrait painter and did hair-work which her father incorporated in the jewellery business. Harriet married Nicholas Vazzin Meziere on 16 Apr. 1781 at Clifton, Bristol, Gloucester. His occupation is not known. There does not appear to have been any issue. He died in London and was buried at St. Mary’s, Lambeth, on 23 Apr. 1783, with his residence given as the parish of St. Giles in the Fields. She died at Southampton, Hampshire, and was buried at St. Mary’s, Southampton, on  2 Sept. 1784. Elmar and Ethlinda, published not long after her marriage, contains dramatic sentimental tales set in India, Persia, and the Middle Ages. It was well subscribed and she dedicated it to Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire (q.v.). Her novel Moreton Abbey; or The Fatal Mystery (Southampton 1786) was left unfinished at her death and the manuscript passed to a sister--probably Elizabeth but possibly Ann--who then placed it with publishers who commissioned an editor to complete it.
