Biography:

MERRYWEATHER, Jane Anderson, formerly LOY (1806-39: findmypast.co.uk)

She was born 13 Dec. 1806 at Whitby, the only daughter of Dr. John Glover Loy and his wife Mary Anderson. She married George Merryweather, also a physician, on 28 Jan. 1826 at Whitby (with the consent of her father, she being a minor). She had three daughters and a son. One daughter, Jane, died in infancy, aged four. Several of her poems record her ill-health and she is thought to have been an invalid for a number of years. The Hermit of Eskdaleside was first published anonymously in the Whitby Repository 8 Mar. 1833, 65-94, then published separately; a second edition with additional poems appeared the same year. She died on 7 Jan. at Whitby and was buried at St. John’s, Eskdaleside.
