Author: Meredith, W. E.

Biography:

MEREDITH, W. E. (fl 1818)

His historical, annotated poem in Spenserian stanzas about a Welsh prince—Llewelyn ap Iorwerth (“the Great”)--was assiduously advertised by his London publishers in 1818, but no reviews have been found and he seems to have been discouraged from further literary ventures. He identifies himself as “Esq.,” a gentleman; he does not appear to have taken a university degree. The preface is signed from “Llanfihangel” (“St. Michael’s Church”) but that name is common to many Welsh districts and does not much narrow the quest. Public records are almost nonexistent for a Welsh “W. E.” or “William E.” Meredith and all too plentiful for plain “William.”
