Author: Mercer, Thomas

Biography:

MERCER, Thomas (b 1709?)

The year of birth is from ECCO and seems early given the 1772 date of his first known publication. Possibly he was the Thomas Mercer, a Writer to the Signet (Scottish lawyer) who lived at the head of Blackfriar's Wynd in Edinburgh in the 1770s-1780s. If so, he was the son of James Mercer and his wife Margaret Wood who had married in Edinburgh on 30 Dec. 1744. Thomas was born on 5 Oct. 1745 and baptised at South Leith on 6 Oct.  The Sentimental Sailor is dedicated to Rousseau. (ancestry.co.uk 5 Nov. 2025) SR
