Author: Mead, Charles
Biography:
MEAD, Charles (fl 1819-31)
Surprisingly little information is to be had about this patriotic author who reported from the "wild retreats" of the Mississippi in 1819 and wrote a literary declaration of independence in his American Minstrel of 1828. He seems to have been a schoolteacher in Philadelphia (School Exercise, his 1820 comprehensive survey of the curriculum, went to a second edition in 1823). He refers to having published in periodicals before producing a volume of verse; his last publication appears to have been a poem, "The Downfall of Despotism," published with Thomas Anderson's Superstition Detected in 1831. It is possible that he is the "C. Mead" buried at Philadelphia in 1853, but that is a long shot. (ancestry.com 20 Sept. 2025; findmypast.com 20 Sept. 2025) HJ
