Author: McKimmey, William
Biography:
MCKIMMEY, William (fl 1818-1834)
He was a Quaker, author of one occasional poem intended to deter readers from crime (1818) and of a prose pamphlet supporting the Hicksite faction within the Society of Friends (Plea of the Innocent, 1834). He is probably the Quaker William McKimmey (1793-1865) who was born in Guilford NC and worked as County Surveyor in Indiana; if so, he married Mary Hodge in 1819, had a family of ten children, became a preacher in 1824, and is buried in Lincolnville IN. The murder that he describes--he witnessed the execution of the killer, Henry Criss--took place in Indiana. But some questions remain: none of the biographical records refers to McKimmey the surveyor as a writer at all, and he had no known connection with Mount Pleasant OH where the poem was published.
