Biography:

MCGOWAN, Alexander (1738-1826: ancestry.co.uk)

He was born at Knockreoch, Kells, in Kirkcudbrightshire in either 1738 or 1745 (the year given by Fasti Ecclesiae Scoticanae). After study at the University of Edinburgh, he became a tutor in the family of John Newall of Earlston, was ordained (c. 1783) and was installed as the minister of the church at Dalry, Kirkcudbrightshire. He married Mary Newall in 1785; they had seventeen children. He issued an elaborate prospectus for a work on elocution but the work itself was never published.
