Author: McDermott, Mary

Biography:

MCDERMOTT, Mary (fl 1832-59)

Nothing is known for certain about this author beyond the very limited information that can be gleaned from her 1832 book. The Preface is signed from “Killileagh Glebe” in County Down, but it is not clear if this was her home or if she was there as a visitor; the address does, however, make it likely she was Protestant and this is confirmed by some of the poems. She may have had a connection with the Hervey family: the book is dedicated to the Marchioness of Bristol, wife of Frederick William Hervey who subscribed for five copies of the book. Four of the Hervey children also subscribed. SR
