Author: McCready, Francis

Biography:

MCCREADY, Francis (fl 1818-20)

The only solid evidence about him comes from his two publications, which appeared in Baltimore and Philadelphia between 1818 and 1820. He identifies himself in the first as a resident of Maryland (to secure copyright), and claims to have been writing for 25 years and teaching penmanship to "youth and men" for 12. Beyond that the ice is thin. A Francis McCready is recorded as having landed as an immigrant in Baltimore in 1817, and a man of the same name appears in the Federal Census of 1850 as a resident of Philadelphia, declaring Ireland his birthplace, his occupation "Tavern Keeper," and the value of his real estate as $6000. It seems plausible but far from certain that they are all the same person. (ancestry.com 4 Dec. 2019)
