MATTISON, Seth (1788-1843: Hollis)
He became a respected minister in the Methodist Episcopal church in New York State but had been born in Shaftsbury VT, son of Lydia (Hopkins) and Abraham Matteson (sic). The Retired Muse, which contains endorsements by ministers of several Christian denominations, is his only book of verse. He married for the first time in 1804, then three times altogether: Lucy Hoyt (d 1824), Betsey Law (d 1840), and Catherine Elizabeth Goodrich who survived him along with at least nine children.
