Biography:

MATHER, Samuel (1706-85: WBIS)

He was born and died in Boston. His mother was Elizabeth (Clark) Mather, second wife of Cotton Mather; Samuel Mather wrote his father's biography (1729). He graduated from Harvard in 1723 and became a preacher, though not as successful in his career as his father and grandfather had been. In 1733 he married Hannah Hutchinson, with whom he had one child, a daughter also named Hannah. He published sermons and some pamphlets concerning church controversies. When he was dismissed from his post at the Second Church in Boston in 1741, some of the congregation followed him and formed a new church, where he remained for the rest of his life. He is buried, along with his wife, in the family plot in the Old Burying Ground in Boston. (ANBO 18 Mar. 2020; ancestry.com 18 Mar. 2020)
