His book is dedicated to James Smith of Jordanhill, architect and geologist, in recognition of his support “for the diffusion of knowledge.” The preface states that the author pursues literature in “the short and disturbed intervals of mechanical labour.” Ancestry.co.uk records indicate he may have been a gardener but no certain biographical information has been located.
