MARRIS, Robert (1783-1835: findmypast.com)
He is probably the Robert Marris who was baptised at Newark upon Trent, Nottinghamshire, on 20 Mar. 1783, the son of Elizabeth (Middlebrook) and Robert Marris, who had married at St. Mary Magdalene there on 25 Sept. 1782. Nothing is known of his education or early life but by 1818 he was living at Wisbech, Isle of Ely, Cambridgeshire, where he married Phillis Rogby on 31 Mar. They had at least one son, Robert (1819-72). Marris died at their home on Lynn Rd. on 30 June 1835 and was buried at St. Peter, Wisbech, on 3 Jul. A will drawn up in 1822 left his property to his wife. A death notice describes him as “greatly respected” and as having worked as a clerk for a local business, Usills, for many years. His second collection of verse, Poetical Reflections, was damned in the Lady’s Monthly Museum, where the reviewer described it as “exceedingly dull; disfigured throughout by slovenly lines and false metre.” He is not known ever to have ventured into print again.
