Author: Maro, Matthew

Biography:

MARO, Matthew (fl 1816)

No records of any kind have been found for Maro, who published only a first instalment of his projected two-part epic poem about the fall of Napoleon. The only clue to his identity is the fact that he dedicated the poem to Hezekiah Niles, founder and editor of the Weekly Register of Baltimore, which ran from 1811 to 1848 and had the widest circulation of any magazine in America at the time. Whether the dedication was inspired by personal acquaintance or political sympathies is not known but the latter is more likely, since Maro praises Niles for his efforts in the cause of "truth, liberty, and man."
