Biography:

MALLETT, Mrs. (fl 1834)

The Maid of the Isle, and Other Poems, published anonymously in London in 1834, is attributed to “Mrs. Mallett”—author of no known other publications—by the BL, followed by Bodley. The reason for the attribution is not clear and one piece of internal evidence seems to contradict it: the final poem, “The Guerilla Brothers, Versified,” has a note to the reader signed “H. L.” But two of the poems included had been previously published in periodicals (the Court Journal and the Irish Carlow Morning Post respectively) and it is possible, though not confirmed, that the author was identified there. The contents have mostly to do with unhappy love, especially with unfaithful men, but also include romantic heroic subjects after the manner of Byron and Hemans (qq.v.), such as “Lines on Greece” and “The Death of Glencoe.” The volume is dedicated in “Friendship” to “Mr. James Davis, of Clapham Rise” of whom likewise no reliable information has been found.
