Biography:

MAITLAND, John (1543-95: ODNB)

A prior author whose poems remained in manuscript until 1830, he was the second son of Sir Richard Maitland (q.v.) and his wife Mary (or Mariota) Cranstoun. He studied at the University of St Andrews and in France. His successful career began with a promotion by Queen Mary but it was as a chief advisor and political tutor to James I that he made his mark and worked to transform the administrative system in Scotland. He became lord chancellor of Scotland and King James elevated him to the peerage as Lord Maitland of Thirlestane in 1590. He married Jane Fleming in 1583; they had two children. He died at Thirlestane Castle on 3 Oct. 1595. (ODNB 30 Jan. 2023)
