Author: Maitland, C.
Biography:
MAITLAND, C. (fl 1832), pseudonym Philo
The identity of Philo, author of The Tribute; a Panegyrical Poem dedicated to Lady Ann (or Anne) Coke of Holkham Hall in Norfolk, is uncertain. Halkett and Laing attributed the poem to “---- Maitland”; the Bodleian Library catalogue proposes “C. Maitland” on what basis is not known. Taking the poem as a piece of flattery from one peer to another, HL may have had reason to believe that the author was one of the Maitlands who were of the family of the earls of Lauderdale. (Lady Anne was the second wife of Thomas Coke, Earl of Leicester, whose deeds the poem celebrates.) The poem is signed from North Walsham, which is not far from Holkham Hall, and is dated 25 Dec. 1832. There is a death record for Louisa Maitland, aged 13, buried at North Walsham in 1828, who may have been baptised at Norfolk on 2 Mar. 1817, the daughter of Charles Maitland, an attorney, and his wife Elizabeth Ann. But the attribution remains tenuous. (ancestry.com 25 Feb. 2023; findmypast.com 25 Feb. 2023) HJ
