Author: Maclaurin, Colin

Biography:

Maclaurin, Colin (b c. 1763 d 1833)

Born at Edinburgh, he was the eldest son of John Maclaurin, Lord Dreghorn (q.v.), and his wife Esther (Cunninghame). His grandfather was Colin Maclaurin, the mathematician; his aunt was Mary Maclaurin (q.v.). Surprisingly little is known about his life, but he was an advocate, became known as Maclaurin of Dreghorn on his father’s death in 1796, and edited his father’s writings in 1798. He married Jane Wilkie of Gilchriston but it is not known if they had children. He seems to have suffered from chronic ill-health (as did other members of his family: his parents had ten children but by 1797 just two sons and one daughter were still alive). F.N.S. on the title page of his pseudonymous Poems may mean “Fellow of No Society.” (ancestry.co.uk 29 Feb 2020; ODNB entry for John Maclaurin 29 Feb 2020)
