Biography:

MACKENZIE, William (c .1772-1852: Memoir of the Late Mr William Mackenzie)

A writing master and penman, he was born at Kirkcudbright and educated at the Kirkcudbright Academy. He moved to Edinburgh where for ten years he was writing master at Heriot’s Hospital school. Subsequently he established his own school in Edinburgh; he was also widely employed as a penman. In about 1817 he returned to Kirkcudbright where he contributed to various periodicals and published a number of educational books: Notes on Philosophy, Education, and Morality (1822), Literary Varieties (1837), The Friend of Youth (1843), Rustic Bower (1844), and The Young Man’s Counsellor (1852). He never married. The 1851 Census shows him living with a nephew on St. Cuthbert Street in Kirkcudbright.
