Born at Clayholes, Stranraer, Wigtownshire, he was the son of Ninian Mackenzie, a mariner. His mother’s name is unknown. He served as the minister at Portpatrick until his death on 22 Dec. 1836. He was appointed Chaplain in Ordinary to George III in 1803 and to William IV in 1830.
