Author: Mackay, J.
Biography:
MACKAY, J. (fl 1795-7)
The author of Quebec Hill cannot be identified with certainty. The poem was published in London and might have been composed entirely from literary sources. In the Preface, however, Mackay claims to have spent "a considerable portion" of his time in Canada, and some internal evidence supports that claim. In a modern scholarly edition Prof. D. M. R. Bentley narrows the list of likely candidates to two: Lieutenant James McKay (c 1738-1818) and Captain John Mackie, who worked in the Canada Trade between 1792 and 1797. (D. M. R. Bentley, "Introduction," Quebec Hill [1988])
