MACCARTHY, Thomas (fl 1819)
MacCarthy published only one volume of verse, Montalto . . . with Other Poems, which was announced in Dec. 1818 and published in 1819. One of the poems had been published earlier in the Belfast Northern Whig. According to O'Donoghue he was a native of Belfast, in northern Ireland, who died young, about 1820. No other information has come to light. The Irishman of that name who graduated MD from the University of Edinburgh on 2 Aug. 1819 is almost certainly a different person: he was a Roman Catholic from Co. Limerick in the south of Ireland who married there in 1833 and maintained his practice into the 1840s.
