Biography:
MACAULAY, John (fl 1792-1809)
O’Donoghue identifies him as the son of the Rev. John Macaulay and born about 1755 but no records have been found. He may have been born in England; the preface to his Unanimity is dated from Vauxhall, 13 Mar. 1780. He studied first at the University of Oxford and then at Trinity College Dublin where he earned his BA (1802), LLB (1807), and LLD (1809); these dates make the 1755 birth year seem unlikely. He was a member of the Royal Irish Academy. The Genius of Ireland was performed at the English Opera House in Capel Street. Aside from the works listed in this database, he also published the first volume of History of the Reformation (1801), a translation from Isaac de Beausorbe.
