Biography:

LYONS, James Gilborne (d 1868: ancestry.com)

He was born in Ireland and graduated from Trinity College Dublin: BA in 1836, LLB in 1838, and MA and LLD in 1842. He was ordained as an Anglican minister, then emigrated to America. According to emigration vessel papers, he was 28 in 1839, but his naturalisation papers (1858) give a birthdate of 1809. At first he served as pastor of St Mary's Church in Burlington NJ. But he moved to Philadelphia in 1846 and turned to teaching; eventually he established his own boarding-school in Haverford PA, where he spent the rest of his life. In Philadelphia he had his 1831 volume of verse reprinted and published two more. He died on 2 Jan. 1868. A final, posthumous Selections from the Sermons and Poems (1868) includes a memoir. His wife Mrs. L. H. Lyons--probably Louisa Haydon, married in 1852--held the copyright. (O'Donoghue; Appleton; ancestry.com 27 Nov. 2019; information from AA) HJ
