Biography:

LUNT, George (1803-85: ANBO)

Born in Newburyport MA, he was the son of a sea captain, Abel Lunt, and his wife Phoebe Tilton. Lunt graduated from Harvard in 1824, taught school in Newburyport for a while, then turned to the law. Called to the bar in 1831, he established a private practice and cultivated his literary interests. His publications over a long writing life include poetry, essays, novels, discourses and orations; after 1835 there were six more volumes of verse, ending with Poems (1884). He was married three times--to Sarah Miles Greenwood in 1834, to Emily Ashton in 1845, and to Adeline Parsons in 1864--and fathered six children. Between 1835 and 1847 he served in the State Senate and House of Representatives. In 1848 he moved to Boston as US Attorney for Massachusetts, a position he held until 1853. He then became a publisher and editor of the Boston Daily Courier from 1857 to 1871. The observation that "He was a man of firm convictions in both political and religious matters, and fearless and manly in their expression" (Appleton) seems to be an understatement. He died in Boston. (ANBO 25 Nov. 2019; Appleton) HJ
