Biography:
LUBY, Catherine, formerly Reynell (c. 1796-1870: ODNB)
Luby’s son, Thomas Clarke Luby, was a prominent Irish patriot and revolutionary; he, not his mother, has an entry in the ODNB. Little is known about her family background or education but her birth name was Catherine Mary Reynell and she may have come from Killarney. Her family was Catholic but she married a Church of Ireland priest, the Rev. James Luby. When Thomas Clarke Luby was born in 1822, he was baptised in the Catholic Pro-Cathedral in Dublin. Luby’s The Spirit of the Lakes has an extensive subscription list headed by Princess Augusta. Her only other publication is Father Mathew; or, Ireland as She Is, a National Poem (1845). She died 14 June 1870 at her residence in St. James’s Terrace, Dolphin’s Barn, Dublin. At the time of her death, Thomas Clarke Luby was in prison and her funeral procession from her home to Glasnevin Cemetery was attended by crowds of patriots and widely reported in the press. The gravestone indicates that James Luby likely predeceased her. (ODNB for Thomas Clarke Luby 7 June 2021; ancestry.co.uk 7 June 2021; Dublin Weekly Nation 25 June 1870) SR
