Biography:

Lovett, John (1761-1818: WBIS)

The son of Captain Samuel Lovett and his wife Abigail Sprague, he was born in Newent CT and graduated from Yale in 1782. In 1788 he married Ann or Nancy McLellan, the daughter of a General: there is no record of children. He spent most of his working life in New York State--Albany, Fort Miller, Lansingburgh--as a land steward or town clerk. He was elected to the New York State assembly in 1800-1. In the War of 1812 he served as military secretary to Gen. Van Rensselaer, with the rank of Colonel, and was wounded at the Battle of Queenston Heights. After the war he returned to Albany as County Clerk, then was elected to the US Congress as the representative for the 9th District of New York, 1813-17. He moved to settle in Perrysburg OH but died at Wayne OH and was buried at Fort Meigs. (ancestry.com 25 Nov. 2019; Biographical Directory of the American Congress 1774-1971 . . . [1971] 1310)
