Biography:

LOTHROP, Reuel (b 1789: ancestry.com)

A Tennessee census of 1860 gives his birthplace as Massachusetts and his occupation as Teacher. By that time he was living in Lincoln TN with a daughter, Mary Lothrop. In 1814, however, when he published his hymns as a "reformed sinner," he was living and working in New Hampshire. He had married Polly Judkins at Grafton NH on 1 Dec. 1812, and with her had three children. He is identified as the printer on some short publications from Meredith Bay NH in 1815-16. In 1816 he was ordained as a Baptist preacher. He became pastor of the congregation in Sutton NH but is also described as an Elder of the congregation in Cavendish VT (just across the state border) in 1819 and as leader of a peace society in Wilton NH in 1824. His first wife died in 1821 and was buried at Cavendish. On 6 Nov. that year he married Sally Spaulding. They had at least two children together but she died in 1831 and was also buried at Cavendish. There is no reliable record of Lothrop's later years apart from the 1860 census that places him in Tennessee. The place and date of his death are not known but he was eventually buried at Cavendish with his two wives. (ancestry.com 24 Nov. 2019; History of Merrimack and Belknap Counties [1885] 631) HJ
