Biography:
LONGMIRE, James Fox (1811-33: Remains)
He was born on 27 Mar. 1811 at Hargrave, Northamptonshire, the fourth son of the Rev. John Martyn Longmire and his wife Mary Fox, who had married in 1804. He was initially taught by his mother but on the removal of the family to Bristol in 1819, he attended schools in Kingsdown, Bath, and Wingfield, Wiltshire, where he received a classical education. He entered Worcester College, Oxford, in 1829 on a clergyman’s scholarship. He competed unsuccessfully for poetry prizes and ill-health in his final two years curtailed his efforts. He returned home to Wingfield (where his father had been curate since 1821) in the autumn of 1833, suffering from consumption, and died there on 3 Oct. His brother Daniel put together a collection by subscription, The Remains (1834), to which he added a memoir. It consisted of the early poems, Oxford prize poem entries, miscellaneous later efforts, translations, and prose essays.
