Biography:

LOCHORE, Robert (1762-1852: ODNB)

The son of James Lochore, a wright, and Janet (Finlay) Lochore, he was born on 7 July 1762 at Strathaven, Lanarkshire. Apprenticed to a shoemaker when he was twelve, he later set up business for himself. On 13 May 1786 at the Low Church, Paisley, Renfrewshire, he married Isobel Browning; they had a number of children but not all survived to adulthood. Two of their sons, Alexander (b 1799) and Gavin (b 1800), became church ministers. Lochore was a friend of Burns; his elegy for Burns, Patie and Ralph, was published in 1797 but is too short to be included in the database. He founded the Annuity Society of Glasgow and contributed to other philanthropic institutions in the city. The 1851 Census shows him living at 116 Portland Street in Glasgow with a son, a daughter, and a servant. He died at home on 27 Apr. 1852 and was buried at the Glasgow High Church. Many of his poems, tales, and his recollections of Glasgow remained in manuscript at his death; these were later presented to the NLS by a great-grandson of Lochore (NLS MS 3585).
