Biography:
LLOYD, Sarah Maria, formerly SMITH (1770-1850)
She was baptised on 18 July 1770 at the Octagon, Norwich, the daughter of James Smith and his wife Frances Holman. She married the Rev. Charles Lloyd (1766-1829), a Dissenting minister and schoolmaster, on 16 Jan. 1811 at Heigham, Norfolk. He had a chequered career, frequently clashing with congregations and other ministers over his refusal to be ordained and administer infant baptism--behaviour typical of advanced Arian/Socinian views. They lived in London at 19 Keppel Street, Russell Square, where they kept a school. They had one son, Francis Vaughan (1811-1824). After marriage Charles Lloyd wrote Observations on the Choice of School (1812), probably to promote their school, and his harsh autobiography, Particulars of the Life of Dissenting Minister(1813), which is a sad monument to his life of conflict and failure but is still of value. She produced Majesty (1819), one of many works written at the time in response to the death of Princess Charlotte. After her husband’s death in 1829, she returned to Norfolk. She died at Norwich, aged 80, and was buried at St. Peter Mancroft on 29 Sept. 1850.
